Navigating the Changes:
Google Business Profiles Websites Shutting Down

Google has revealed its decision to discontinue websites created through Google Business Profiles, leaving businesses with a tight transition timeline.

Google Business Websites Closing Down

Beginning on March 1, 2024, these websites will cease to function, redirecting visitors to the respective Business Profiles until June 10, 2024, after which they will encounter a “page not found” error.

The End of Free Websites Marks a New Beginning for Business

This move by Google raises concerns about the limited timeframe for businesses that do not have a standalone website to adapt. To maintain an online presence, affected businesses need to create a new website using alternative tools (such as WordPress or Wix) and update their Business Profile accordingly, with the new site address before the impending deadline.

For companies who have set up custom domains to direct traffic to their Google Business Profile websites, Google advises logging into the hosting company account and utilising the “Redirect” option or a similar feature to reroute the domain to a different website before June 10, 2024.

Do You Need a New Website? Quite Possibly

Of course, if you already have a business website you may not even be aware of this under-used feature of the Google Business platform. But if you’re one of the millions of businesses who do not have your own site, the time to act is now.

According to Google, the decision to discontinue websites made with Google Business Profiles stems from the low engagement observed with these basic, templated websites. Despite the imminent closure, small business owners will still have access to their main Business Profiles, ads landing pages (for those without a website) and the various resources available to connect with potential customers online.

The Evolution of Google Business Continues

The official email from Google to businesses using this feature explains the transition process. Starting March 1, 2024, customers attempting to access their websites will be redirected to their Business Profiles, where they can showcase business information and add social media links. This redirection will be in effect until June 10, 2024, marking the end of the websites’ availability.

Many business owners are saying a three-month window for transition is inadequate, suggesting that Google should have allowed longer redirects or provided additional support. However, Google remains committed to supporting small businesses in the online ecosystem, emphasising the ongoing availability of Business Profiles and ad landing pages.
