What is Agile SEO?

Our take on a more dynamic approach to Search Engine Optimisation

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is a vital part of digital marketing that helps businesses enhance their online visibility and attract targeted traffic to their websites. Traditional SEO strategies tend to focus mainly on keyword rankings and are rigid in nature. Over the last 2-3 years we’ve noticed that this methodology has become less effective in an ever-changing digital world.

That’s why we developed a system we call Agile SEO and in this blog post, we will explore the concept, how it is used and the results it can achieve. We’ll also explain why we believe it is more sensible (and cost-sffective) than traditional SEO.

So, just what do we mean by Agile SEO?

Agile SEO is a dynamic approach to search engine optimisation that emphasises adaptability and responsiveness. It employs the Agile methodology, a project management framework commonly used in software development, to prioritise and execute SEO tasks. The primary objective of Agile SEO is to deliver value to the user quickly while continually improving and adapting to evolution in search engine algorithms and user behavior.

The Agile methodology involves several key principles, including:

  • Prioritising tasks based on their importance and impact
  • Breaking down larger projects into small, manageable tasks
  • Work delivered in ‘sprints’, to manage workload
  • Regularly reviewing progress and making adjustments as needed
  • Encouraging collaboration and communication between team members

These principles are applied to SEO by scaling back large projects such as website content improvement or backlink building into smaller, actionable tasks. These tasks are then prioritised based on their significance and predicted impact on SEO performance. Regular reviews are conducted to evaluate progress and suggest any necessary adjustments to the strategy.

What are the tools used in Agile SEO?

Agile SEO employs many of the same tools and techniques used to manage and execute traditional SEO tasks effectively. But it also requires a dynamic method of sharing and reviewing data in (almost) real time with clients, in order to rapidly adjust strategy.

Some essential tools include:

  • Reporting Tools: Constant review is vital and an accurate, up to date reporting platform plays a large part in delivering the ability to see exactly what is working – and what is not. At Cash Cow we use our own custom reporting tool, that tracks user experience, local or regional visibility and website data, alongside traditional metrics such as visitor numbers and technical errors.
  • Google Analytics: This tool tracks website traffic, user behavior, and other metrics that help optimse website performance.
  • SEMrush: SEMrush is an all-in-one SEO tool that provides comprehensive data on keyword research, site audit, and competitor analysis.
  • Google Search Console: Google Search Console is a free tool provided by Google that helps monitor website performance, identify technical issues, and submit sitemaps.

By utilising optimisation tools, businesses can plan, execute and measure the success of their Agile SEO strategy effectively.

A quick word about AI and how it’s set to change SEO

At the time of writing this post a slew of new Artificial Intelligence enhanced tools were coming onto the scene.

We’ve written a separate post on the growing influence of AI in SEO and looked at how it will change the practice over coming years.

What are the results of Agile SEO?

Agile SEO can deliver significant results in terms of improved search engine rankings, increased organic traffic, and higher conversion rates. Often an improvement will be seen within 4-6 weeks.

However, just like any SEO strategy, it takes time to see real results. The benefits of Agile SEO are more long-term as the discipline focuses on continuous improvement and adaptation to changing search engine algorithms and user behavior.

Long term benefits of Agile SEO:

  • Improved ROI: By focusing on delivering value to the user and continually improving website performance, businesses can achieve a higher ROI on their SEO investment.
  • More sales, leads and calls: By focusing on the quick wins and easy gains first, Agile SEO works more efficiently than traditional optimisation techniques, while building a solid foundation for sustained growth.
  • Greater involvement and accountability: Knowing exactly what’s going on with your online marketing isn’t every business owner’s cup of tea. But having constant access to all your reporting tools and analytical data removes the ‘smoke and mirrors’ reputation SEO often brings to the table!
  • Higher Quality Content: By breaking down large projects into smaller tasks, businesses can focus on creating a high-quality online experience that delivers real value to the user.
  • Increased Flexibility: Agile SEO enables businesses to quickly adapt to changing market conditions and search engine algorithms. By prioritising tasks based on their importance and impact, businesses can focus on areas that will deliver the most value to users.
  • Improved Collaboration: Agile SEO encourages collaboration and communication between suppliers (like us) and the client (you). This frequently results in better practices and increased productivity for the companies we work with.

Why is Agile SEO better than traditional SEO?

Agile SEO is more adaptable and responsive to changing market conditions and Google’s frequently shifting algorithms than traditional SEO. It prioritises value delivery to the user and encourages continuous improvement, making it a more sensible approach in today’s ever-changing digital landscape.

In conclusion, Agile SEO is a more dynamic approach to search engine optimisation with an emphasis on adaptability and responsiveness. The use of new tools and developing techniques help businesses effectively grow online traffic by accurately measuring the success (or not) of current SEO strategy and tweaking it on the fly.

While it may take a little time to see results they do tend to come faster than traditional methods and deliver serious benefits in the longer term, basically building the platform for continued growth in rankings, organic traffic and conversion rates.

In today’s fast-evolving digital landscape, businesses need to adopt an Agile SEO approach to stay ahead of the competition and continuously improve their online visibility, rather than employing a ‘set and forget’ model. That includes on-site work, like adopting best SEO practices and giving each of your website’s pages clearly defined keyword goals.

As you can see, we’re big fans of Agile SEO. We’ve employed many of its practices over the last 2-3 years and fine-tuned many of our strategies while continuing to develop new ones.
